If arguments and confrontations make you want to run and hide, you're not alone. Here's the first thing you should do: treat that friction like an actual fire. I'll explain what I mean in the trailer for my new podcast, where we'll demystify connection and help you prevent conflict from becoming contempt.

TRANSCRIPT

What's the first thing you should do if you find yourself in an argument with someone?

Slow down.

Step one: slow everything down.

Take a deep breath.

Stay silent, and ask a question. Don't make a statement. Above all, take your time. Conflicts tend to spin out of control really, really fast, so don't feed the speed.

Think about an argument like a fire, and not a fire that started by a lightning bolt either. This was a fire that someone chose to set with you on purpose, so don't rush into it like a firefighter. Don't try to douse it; they'll just crank up the heat. And don't try to fight fire with fire because you double your chances of getting burned.

Don't treat this like a firefighter. Treat it like an investigator. Remember, they set this fire on purpose. This isn't any old blaze.

This is arson.

Treat it like there's information to be gained, and then use that information to make your next move. But what should that be?

That's what we're going to talk about in this podcast, among other things.

Hey there! I'm Joshua Johnson. I spent 25 years in broadcasting, including as a host on NPR and an anchor for NBC News. I have had a very interesting, wildly diverse life journey. Nowadays, you may know me as Dwight Richmond, the satirical anchorman for the Onion News Network. But all of my work has connected in a very unusual way.

It's taught me a lot about connection. We deal with a lot of conflict nowadays, and it's very easy for conflict to turn into contempt. I want to share what I've learned over 25 years in broadcasting and communications to help you connect more meaningfully and protect the connections that matter the most to you.
